Sure, we count the days until warmer weather, but summer also means less clothes, less makeup, and – unfortunately – more judgement.
The contents of our closet says a lot about our character, and it can make us feel vulnerable when we’re not all wrapped up in layers of self-expression come summer. Abbott Lyon’s summer campaign is all about putting an end to that self-doubt, and some incredible women are leading the charge.
Abbott Lyon has partnered with five diverse women, from a body confidence advocate to a pro-swimmer, to bring our ‘wear less, shine more’ campaign to life. We want their inspiring personal stories to be an empowering lesson in confidence, proving that wearing less can actually mean shining more.
The more skin we have on show, the more our jewellery can become a kind of armour, giving us a powerful feeling of confidence as we express ourselves and our style. That’s why we chose these incredible women to be featured in our latest summer campaign – they know this feeling all too well. Their inspirational stories are an empowering lesson in confidence and celebrating the real you.
They’ll share their personal stories over the next month and we’d love to see how you’re making summer your own too.
"Don’t we all deserve to shine throughout summer?"
Bailie Annalise, dancer & model
"Sure, I’m a model, but I actually get a lot of nasty looks in summer the more my skin is on show. I have the condition vitiligo and though I’ve worked hard to be comfortable in my skin, this means sometimes my confidence needs a top up. That’s where my jewellery comes in.
I love wearing jewellery in summer. Even when I'm only wearing a bikini, it's just like a little zhuzh to make me feel confident. My Abbott Lyon Evil Eye Necklace is like my lucky talisman protecting me from any bad vibes. For thousands of years, the ‘evil eye’ has symbolised love and protection - it reminds me that we need to love ourselves, especially that little version that’s taken a lot of punches."
"I’m wearing less and shining more this summer through my jewellery"
Alex Light, author & body confidence advocate
"Who else finds the summertime a bit triggering? Don’t get me wrong, the sunshine and warmer weather is unbelievably welcome, but the season means a lot more skimpy clothes and showing skin. It’s taken me so long to feel comfortable with all that, but I’ve finally found peace with it.
It clicked when I realised no one actually cares about you as much as you think… you’re not the centre of everyone else’s universe, only yours! This means you have to do what makes you happy and comfortable – forget about anyone else."
"My gym uniform means I’m wearing less on the outside, but the jewellery makes me feel like I’m shining more from the inside"
Natalee Barnett, fitness coach & founder of the Girl Spot Gym
As a fitness coach, practicality is key for me – but don’t get me wrong, I still like to look cute. That’s why I wear minimalist jewellery, like a necklace and one or two rings, to make sure they don’t get in the way.
I always choose sentimental pieces that make me smile whenever I notice them at work – it really does make the day go faster and remind me what I’m doing this all for. My favourite Abbott Lyon piece is a necklace with baby feet on, which is so special to me because I’m about to have a baby girl!"
"Being able to wear my jewellery in my happy place makes me feel my most powerful"
Seren Jones, co-founder - Black Swimming Association
"We all have that piece that feels like a part of us, and sometimes taking it off feels just wrong. Maybe it’s the journalist in me, but I find that story and connection to an object so compelling – if it’s got a part of me in it, no wonder I want to keep it on at all times!
My necklace feels as much a part of me as my freckles. I get lots of people asking me if they're tattoos, actually, or if I put them on like makeup in the morning, but they’re just me. I love them because my grandad says they look like kisses from the sun."
Welcome to your ‘wear less, shine more’ era
As well as a powerful tool for self-expression, we’ve always wanted Abbott Lyon pieces to be easy to love and to work for you, which is why we’re proud that all products are waterproof, sweat-proof, tarnish-proof and hypoallergenic.
This means no green marks on your skin or the extra admin of having to take your jewellery off before diving into the pool. You can focus on what’s really important: enjoying every moment.
